Abrigo Diego, Mexico

Site: Abrigo Diego (000)

Abrigo Diego once rivaled the complexity and intensity of painting seen at Panther Cave and Rattlesnake Canyon but much of the site has been scoured by dramatic flooding of its short tributary to the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. Remaining panels contain rabbit-eared and snake-headed shamans, aligning the iconography with that of Rattlesnake Canyon. These three sites are equally spaced along the Rio Grande, suggesting they may have been ceremonial centers where people gathered for ritual events on a scheduled basis.
